Introducing: The ChasmFriends Get A Pet from Hoid’s Storybook Collection

Not every story on Roshar is about ancient oaths and the end of the world. Some are about friendship, found family, and figuring out what to do when your pet shoutie just won't stop running away from perfectly reasonable greatshells. The ChasmFriends made their debut at Dragonsteel Nexus 2024 and promptly captured the hearts of everyone who met them—and now, as part of Hoid's Storybook Collection, they're ready for their close-up.

Aren’t they cute?! This adorable cover was designed by Dragonsteel’s very own Anna Earley (you’ll likely recognize Anna’s work from the ChasmFriends Story Deck® and Dragonsteel Character Pin series).

The Stormlight Archive has brought worlds and characters to life for over a decade. Cosplays, conventions, novels, novellas, and more help show off the spark that Brandon ignited with the story of the Knights Radiant, the Heralds, and a clash for the fate of the cosmere. Of all the many dangers on Roshar, few are as fearsome than the Chasmfiend; a massive greatshell with an appetite as deep as the chasms and a ferocity matched by the fiercest voidbringer.

So it makes sense to reimagine them as the ChasmFriends, the earnest and adorable characters that debuted as part of the Story Deck® at Dragonsteel Nexus in 2024. Cleverclaws, Shredhead, Burpslurper, Howlerina, and Darren won hearts at the convention, with fans trading and opening Story Deck® cards to complete their stories and search for the full collection. Theirs is a story of friendship and caretaking, and what to do when your pet human—or “shoutie”—doesn’t quite fit in with your greatshell pals.

After this appearance, the charismatic crustaceans were destined for more. With expanded art, an adorable plushie, pins, and more, the ChasmFriends are in top form for Hoid’s Storybook Campaign. Anna Earley, the original artist behind the ChasmFriends, has done beautiful work to make Cleverclaws and friends a core part of Hoid’s story.
