I listened to The Fires of December samples on YouTube with my wife. We listened while we made dinner and did dishes, and by the time the last samples came out, we were eager to listen to the full audiobook together. We spent the evening after the book’s release curled up on the couch following December through time and up the River Violet.
We’ve spent similar evenings together listening to dozens of our favorite stories. We listened to Project Hail Mary and Pride and Prejudice, and we often spend road trips, cozy nights at home, and even time at work blitzing through our two-person book club.
Throughout her next day at work, I got updates on every chapter:
“I love Michael Kramer. I don’t know who else can be Hoid”
“I am so worried about this villain. But I also kind of love him?”
“I finished the book. I think I’m going to go back to chapter one.”
She even sent me sketches that found homes in the margins of her work notebook as she daydreamed about December’s adventure.
By the time we met up at home, she had happy tears in her eyes, a frequent phenomenon whenever we finish a book that we loved. December won her over completely, superseding Tress and Yumi to become her favorite.
For a week after we finished the audiobook, December remained a daily topic of conversation. We compared the beats of her story to the others we had on top of our minds; her interpersonal struggles echo some of Elizabeth Darcy’s and her prescient experiences bring to mind the spice-addled visions of the Kwizatch Haderach and the Bene Gesserit.
Every secret project Brandon writes brings something new to the table. New worlds, new characters to fall in love with, new ideas that push the boundaries of the Cosmere in fun directions. With each peek behind the curtain we learn more about the events unfolding while Roshar and Scadrial brace for the big events on the horizon.
Brandon will be writing and revising the Cosmere’s main line series, keeping readers waiting for a few more years. With stories like December’s, we are in good company while we wait.
The physical release for The Fires of December is coming just in time for the holidays, so you can bet my list is already started. If you want to get the bundle for yourself, including a figurine of the glass cat Beautiful and a December character pin, you can join the preorder here.
